Cybersecurity Documentation Services for Work That Needs to Get Finished
I’m Michael Messina, the founder of Forward Security Labs. I hold a B.S. in Cybersecurity and work directly on defined GRC and documentation engagements. I help small and midsize organizations build, repair, and organize cybersecurity and GRC documentation around the controls, systems, people, and requirements they actually have. The work can be a defined policy set, risk register, control mapping, SSP or POA&M support, evidence structure, or another scoped documentation package.
This is project-based support for teams with a specific backlog, customer request, assessment need, or deadline. If you need recurring ownership after the initial work is complete, see ongoing and fractional GRC support.
Cybersecurity Documentation Buyers Commonly Need
- Security policies and operating procedures
- Risk registers, treatment plans, and remediation trackers
- Control mappings and responsibility matrices
- System Security Plan and POA&M support for applicable NIST and CMMC readiness work
- Incident response, business continuity, and recovery documentation
- Vendor-risk and customer-assurance documentation
- Evidence inventories, evidence indexes, and assessment-ready organization
- After-action reports and improvement plans
What Makes Documentation Usable
A policy is not useful because it contains the right vocabulary. It is useful when it describes the organization that is expected to follow it, assigns responsibility, matches current systems and practices, and can be supported by evidence.
FSL starts with the applicable scope and client-confirmed facts. Gaps and assumptions are identified instead of being filled with invented answers. Drafts are reviewed with the people who own the process before they are treated as final.
Defined Documentation Services
Policy and Procedure Development
Creation or revision of policies and procedures for the agreed framework, customer requirement, or operating need. Each document is scoped to the organization and routed to the appropriate internal owner for approval.
Risk Registers and Remediation Tracking
Risk statements, affected assets or processes, current safeguards, treatment decisions, owners, target dates, and status tracking. The output is designed to support decisions and follow-up, not just populate a spreadsheet.
Control Mapping and Evidence Organization
Mapping applicable requirements to current controls, responsible owners, available evidence, gaps, and planned actions. Evidence is organized for efficient review without claiming that a document proves more than it does.
NIST and CMMC Readiness Documentation
Scoped support for System Security Plans, POA&Ms, policies, evidence indexes, control narratives, and remediation tracking where applicable. See CMMC compliance readiness for the full service. FSL is not a C3PAO and does not perform CMMC certification assessments.
Customer Assurance and Questionnaire Follow-Up
Documentation work that follows a customer security review, including policy gaps, evidence organization, response-library maintenance, and remediation tracking. For a specific questionnaire, see security questionnaire support. For a defined review of an existing questionnaire, see Security Questionnaire Rescue.
For a practical evidence and approval workflow, use the Security Questionnaire Response Guide.
Continuity and Incident Documentation
Business continuity, incident response, communications, recovery, decision-log, and improvement documentation within the agreed scope. For a broader review of critical dependencies and recovery priorities, see operational resilience consulting.
Who This Service Fits
- Growing companies facing customer, audit, insurer, or partner requirements
- Small defense contractors that need readiness documentation support
- Healthcare and public-safety organizations with documentation gaps
- MSPs, MSSPs, vCISOs, CMMC firms, and consultancies with a defined overflow work package
- Prime contractors that need documented cybersecurity, resilience, or preparedness deliverables
How a Documentation Project Works
- Confirm the requirement. Identify the framework, customer request, assessment need, contract requirement, or operational problem the documentation must support.
- Establish the factual baseline. Review current documents, systems, owners, practices, evidence, and known gaps. Restricted data-handling needs are agreed before sensitive material is exchanged.
- Build and review the documents. Drafts are tied to the agreed scope and reviewed with the people responsible for the described processes.
- Organize approval and follow-up. Final deliverables identify approvals, open items, owners, and maintenance needs where included in scope.
Cybersecurity Documentation Questions
Can you customize templates we already have?
Yes. Existing documents can be reviewed and adapted when they provide a useful starting point. FSL will identify language that does not match the organization rather than carrying it forward unchanged.
Can you write an SSP or POA&M for CMMC?
FSL can support SSP, POA&M, policy, evidence, and remediation documentation as part of a defined readiness engagement. The organization remains responsible for accurate system information, implemented controls, approvals, and required affirmations.
Do you certify compliance?
No. FSL provides readiness, documentation, risk, and implementation support. FSL does not provide legal advice, a SOC 2 examination, CMMC certification assessment, or a guarantee that a regulator, assessor, auditor, customer, or other third party will accept a deliverable.
Can this become ongoing support?
Yes. A defined documentation project can stand alone or transition into ongoing GRC support when the organization needs recurring maintenance, evidence reviews, questionnaires, vendor-risk work, or program ownership.
Get a Defined Documentation Scope
Describe the documents you need, the requirement or deadline driving the work, what already exists, and who owns the underlying processes. Do not send PHI, CUI, credentials, or other restricted material through the initial contact form.
